What is it Worth?
An expose of Brazilian slavery and the continuing poverty today
  110 mins duration

Drawing comparison between the times of slavery and the pseudo benevolence of some charitable organizations set up to deal with poverty in Brazil What is it Worth? gets discussion moving!

The Story

Candinho is a slave hunter and Arminda a fugitive pregnant slave. Once caught by Candinho, Arminda is returned to her master and has a miscarriage. Candinho then receives his compensation and is now able to bring up his newborn son.

Contemporary urban Brazil. A marketing consultancy team discusses a project to donate computers to a poor neighbourhood. Arminda and Candinho, now live different roles in different times but face similar dilemmas. The money these charities spend could buy every homeless child a home each? Where does all the money go and who is actually benefiting?

Sergio Bianchi's begs the question: is there any difference between slavery and the continuous exploitation of misery? What is all of this worth?

Director:

Bianchi is a contemporary descendent of the Brazilian film movement known as Cinema Novo, or "new cinema." Cinema Novo sought to introduce a kind of modernist film esthetic influenced by neo-realism and the French New Wave into Brazilian cinema, but more importantly it hoped to make the cinema a part of a national dialogue about that country's development and future.

Production Company:

São Paulo based Agravo Produções has produced all of Sergio Bianchi's films to date. The company is one of the few auteur-driven companies in the country and continues to grow and develop projects that stimulate and challenge.
